California Legion Case Study: Uniting a Statewide Fanbase

California Legion entered its inaugural season facing a challenge few professional sports organizations encounter.

The club was formed in July 2025 through the combination of San Diego Legion and Rugby Football Club Los Angeles, bringing together two existing organizations, two fanbases, and years of history under one new statewide identity.

The transition created uncertainty and frustration among parts of the existing fanbase. California Legion needed to introduce a new brand while giving supporters across the state a reason to rally behind it.

SOAR Media joined the Legion less than 60 days before kickoff. In that short window, SOAR helped announce the rebrand, establish the club’s marketing direction, build a full-season marketing plan, and prepare the organization for its first campaign as California Legion.

By the end of the season, California Legion had built a statewide audience, added more than 6,000 social followers, reached millions of people, and advanced to the 2026 MLR Championship Final.

The Mission

Turn two fanbases into one California Legion.

SOAR’s first challenge went beyond promoting rugby matches. The new club needed to earn trust from supporters in San Diego and Los Angeles while introducing a statewide identity across five California home markets.

With less than two months before kickoff, brand launch and season execution happened at the same time. SOAR helped establish the Legion’s brand direction and built a marketing plan centered on one idea: California’s professional rugby team.

SOAR managed social media, paid media, email, SMS, traditional media, public relations, blogs, creative direction, and brand management throughout the 2026 season. Each channel reinforced the same statewide story.

Social content introduced fans to the players, personality, and new identity of the club. Paid media expanded reach across California, while email and SMS created direct connections with inherited and newly acquired audiences.

SOAR also maintained brand consistency across fan touchpoints during the early stages of the transition. As the team began winning, the marketing operation gave supporters a shared story to rally around.

"This year wasn’t just a campaign—it was a transformation. SOAR delivered us from noise into dominance."

The Impact

A divided audience became a statewide fanbase.

California Legion generated 15.3 million organic social impressions during its inaugural season and reached 7.8 million unique people. The club grew its total social audience beyond 135,000 followers while adding more than 6,000 new followers during the season.

Engagement also strengthened as the season progressed. Instagram engagement increased from 4.13% during the regular-season reporting window to 8.71% during the playoff stretch, showing stronger fan response as the Legion’s run continued.

Paid media added 9.44 million impressions and generated more than 125,000 link clicks. Email campaigns delivered 1.63 million messages across 119 campaigns, while SMS, public relations, and media outreach helped keep supporters connected throughout the season.

The strongest result went beyond any single metric. Less than a year after two organizations became one, supporters across California were rallying behind the Legion during a run to the 2026 MLR Championship Final.

SOAR entered less than 60 days before kickoff with a new brand, a frustrated fanbase, and an entire season to build. By the end of the year, California Legion had a statewide identity and a fanbase moving forward together.
